Gaston Zavalla Ortigas (1931-1990)
As Dean of the Asian Institute of Management from 1986-1990, he supported the pioneering concept of "development management". Under him, AIM opened new programs catering to social issues, such as women in development, agrarian reform, and environmental protection.
As institutions adapt to climate change and other global challenges, changemakers have a pivotal role in driving equitable transition. The Gaston Z. Ortigas Fellows Program empowers individuals to co-convene diverse stakeholders to work on wicked problems, and then lead the way, effecting change at the provincial, city, provincial, national, and transnational levels.
An initiative of the Asian School of Governance, this program is named to memorialize the legacy of Gaston Z. Ortigas as the visionary behind the MDM program and his commitment to sustainable development. This program provides MDM alumni from the Asian Institute of Management with a platform for engaging government, multilateral agencies, Local Government Units, universities, CSOs, and other stakeholders to become change agents at nexus that are often too complex for many institutions to engage in. By engaging with LGUs and universities, the GZO Fellows also retool and sharpen their AI-enabled skills in operating in complex, larger-scale, and open systems. The GZO Fellows program aims to equip MDM alums with next-generation Bridging Leadership skills for ecosystem-wide impact.

Program Details
Our program is designed to provide training and support to GZO Fellows, ensuring they can build upon their MDM skillsets and portfolios and extend these into various transitions in sectoral or industry ecosystems.
Here's what you can expect:
Program Overview: A project-oriented leadership project experience focused on ecosystem leadership.
Eligibility Criteria: Open to MDM alumni with a passion for leadership, sustainable development, and ecosystem change.
SDG-oriented leadership project of your choice.
University Partnerships: Fellows will co-convene and advise impact fellowships with local university partners.
Advanced leaders will help shape transnational university co-creation in the Asia-Pacific region.
Curriculum: A diverse range of modules covering policy, technology, and community engagement.
Mentorship: Guidance from experienced mentors in the field.
Locations: Engagement with local governments at provincial, city, and municipal levels as well as with local university partners. Fellows have the option to work with any of our Co-creation Labs.

Many MDM cohorts were equipped with tools and mindsets largely from the manufacturing world. As we learned during the pandemic, we need leaders who can intervene in complex, adaptive, open systems, while also engaging conventional hierarchies.
The Gaston Z. Ortigas Fellowship program provides a platform for MDM alums to learn by doing - engaging complex systems through Mayors, markets, and mindsets.
